It's all fun and games until

(Above) Before the rain. Happy. Joy.
(Above) There was a live band playing at the other end of the street.

My Dear Husband (soaking wet) in the wreckage of display tent.

Salvaged during the storm.
There's a car under that tree.
Yesterday my Husband and I set up shop at the Kent (Ohio) Art & Wine Festival. Readers may remember Kent had tornado like conditions last time around and I cancelled at the last moment.... Later that night (after the festival was officially canceled) I congratulated myself for making a good decision.
Heh. Now fast forward to yesterday... The re-scheduled event had a 40% chance for rain and I decided it was worth the risk. We set up. I had a blast talking to people and getting valuable feedback on my paintings. My homemade notecards were a total hit and sales on those were brisk. Happyhappyjoy. Husband went off to find us some icecream.
The skies then darkened ominously & suddenly. But I see somebody from the local paper buzzing around artist George Kocar next door and decide to hang around and see if I too can get some publicity. (doh!) Husband later reports that he saw lightning and he immediately turned around to come back to the booth.
Then it rained. You wouldn't believe how fast and how furiously the rain arrived. Lightning hit a nearby tree and crushed a fellow exhibitor's car. Within minutes the sides of the street became fast moving streams. We tried grabbing and stacking the art in the middle of the booth, but the canopy top blew partially off. Things got wet. Large works on paper were ruined. Several small daily paintings were damaged when one of the display racks blew over. All paper products were ruined: business cards, flyers & notecards. At some point I just stood there and cried.
I'm sure there's a bright side to this somewhere... Right now (Sunday morning) I'm having a problem finding it. I'm gonna take a week and let things air out literally and figuratively. I need a play date with my nephews. It's time for a break, will be back in a week or so.

Burgundy Magnolias flower tree branch painting

Burgundy Magnolias Oil on wood each 12" x 12" NFS

These began as companion pces to the pair of sunflower paintings I posted previously. It's funny though: I almost went back in to tweak the sunflowers but forced myself to paint something new. ...and somehow all the fixes I had wanted to do to the sunflowers went into these magnolias. I LOVE how these paintings turned out despite the fact that they now look totally un-related to the sunflowers. Now, I'm thinking to do a pair of tulip companions for the magnolias.

Here's one that I will totally paint again--but bigger. There's lots of tiny details I will add and refine next time around. I am really happy with this one.

Tremont Art Walk Pictures

A few pictures from the Tremont Art Walk yesterday... WKCY Channel 3 Cleveland was there to gauge community spirit after a non fatal shooting/robbery attempt (just outside) the area at last month's event. The victim was internationally known neon artist Jeff Chiplis who lives in Tremont.
WKCY interviewed my Husband for the story and he commented about how important it is for people to not "back down" and get out to attend events like the art walk. This morning I happened to turn on the television immediately upon awaking and there was my hot husband!! ...and ok, since this blog IS about me: My banner was in the background of the shot and there was also video of me trying to figure out where to hang paintings. (: So, I was kinda pyched about that.
I haven't done too many outdoor events... In the past I know I've had the tendency to crowd too much art in to too little space. I tried not to do it last night. Also, note to self: The sun does a little thing after 9pm, it goes away!! Bring spot lights! Anyway, live and learn. It was super worthwhile event and I hope to do it again soon!

Tremont Art Walk

Longtime readers of this blog know that a few years ago, I took a break from all things art. During that time I sold antique lighting and hardware on Ebay (over 2500 positive transactions/feedbacks, woohoo!) One of my favorite suppliers was the Cleveland Auction Company. Well, about a year ago they opened an arts & antiques shop right in the middle of Tremont. My husband and I live in Tremont and this was a great perk for the neighborhood! ...not to mention yet another fun destination for the monthly art walk! There is a point to this story: They've been kind enough to grant me permission to hustle my wares (um yeah, paintings) there TONIGHT! Yes! Tonight is the Tremont Art Walk! Come on over and browse my latest small paintings under a luxurious 10x10 canopy. Assuming it doesn't rain, in which case a smaller selection will be available inside the shop.
Be sure to visit the Eye Candy Gallery too!

Painter & blogger Kat Corrigan of Minneapolis is painting 30 dogs in 30 days. I think her little dog portraits are sooo expressive and charming, check 'em out on her blog. I tried to get my friend Suzi's dog into the mix, but by the time she got around to sending pictures, Kat had already picked all 30 dogs. Fun project!
In other news, I painted another version of First Freesias, this time much bigger!

Yeesh. If this painting was a contestant on American Idol, Simon Cowell would call it "self indulgent." I'd been wanting to paint my recently acquired vintage rubber squeak toys... But in this painting I also tried a different palette and a few other silly tricks. Note to self: Keep it simple.

Standing Room Only white freesia flower

Standing Room Only Oil on wood 10" x 8"
It was a stellar week: No show & tells, no messing with marketing materials or trying to drum up web traffic & sales. I had exactly one thing on my to-do list: Paint. Oh! I wish more weeks could be like this.
