Here's a portrait of my sister and her youngest son, Russell. I'm happy with it and she was thrilled. I SO enjoy painting portraits.
It's the waiting for client/customer approval that KILLS me. Honestly, I'm a nervous wreck. Even when it's my own sister who I'm waiting on!! When I used color pencils, I was more confident about "likeness" issues. But at this stage in my progress as a painter-- It's better if I don't even try to capture the kind of details a typical portrait requires. This one seems to work, even without a lot of detail. ...and what a nice reminder of just how wonderful portraiture can be when that happens. Sister now wants a portrait of JUST Russy. So, I suspect that'll happen here soon.
It is lovely Diane. The simplicity of the painting is also the charm of the painting. Very uncluttered and straight forward. Don't change that!
ReplyDeleteSo amazing that you could get so much emotion into that little 6 x 6 painting..... No wonder your sister loved it!!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
I have to echo Carol's and Marian's comments and add that your mastery of skin tones is wonderful. Thanks for stopping by my rookie blog. I've followed yours for a while now.
ReplyDeletehugs!
Nice job Diane. How wonderful. I like the way the arm of the little boy curves around and draws the eye back around in a circular motion. As I often say, less is more. You have captured much with fewer details.
ReplyDeleteeveryone left wonderful comments here ... and I agree
ReplyDeleteI also love the purple and green
just wonderful Diane
Hey this is great Diane! So lovely in your style of brushwork and muted detail with wonderful edges....
ReplyDeleteI love this Diane, it has a very nice feeling to it and great composition. I think the composition you chose adds to the personal nature of this portrait, it feels intimate. Very nice!

Wow, I can't believe how many people commented on this portrait. Thanks SO much!
ReplyDeleteGreat mood and color--nice work, Diane.
ReplyDeleteThis one is great - I love the nice simple brushstrokes that you did in the hair. Surely she loved this one!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things is to find a blog I love and start from the very beginning... So... I've finished 2008. What a pleasure to watch your work and progression over time. I'm especially in love with your flowers in bottles and jars. I need to spend some time just closely studying your vases and painting of glass.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to moving on to 2009.
