Blue Notion water soluble oil paint

Water soluble oil paints dry fast.  Large paintings must be planned!  This painting is 20" x 20."  Working the whole canvas at the same time to completion is not wise unless it's a one day job.  Some colors dry to tacky--even overnight.

I've been carefully painting in sections.  Not crazy about that but I'm learning as I go.  This painting still needs a patterned tablecloth added.  So far, I am really happy with it, hoping to post the finished painting next week.

  1. What a lovely LOVELY start to what I know is going to be a killer painting. I think its cool you're doing something so Earth friendly even though its learning how to work a new medium.

  2. I wondered how the water soluble oils worked. I didn't want to buy some yet because I like the time I have with my oils. Lovely painting..you will have to keep us informed on how you like those paints..have a great weekend.

  3. This is wonderful! Love the blues- here come the questions though...Why the switch to water soluble oils? Is this first try with them? Do you like other than the quicker drying time? Just curious:) Have heard about them but never tried them.

  5. Kathy! When I decided to try oil painting again (about three years ago)these were the first I tried. My husband was concerned about odor from regular oils/turps, he has a nose like a police dog/very sensitive! The clean up is easy, LOVE that. But of course, I read other artist blogs/experiences in painting and I have a vague memory of using regular oils years ago-- I definitely DO miss the slow drying nature of traditional oils a lot, no doubt about that!! But the upside is, the water soluble oils are forcing me to plan better. Also, the nature of daily painting (a lot of smalls that lend themselves so beautifully to doing larger work later)--is perfect for this medium! ...and I figure I'm still on a learning curve especially with the larger format work. (: So, I will keep at it and have no plans to go back to traditional oils at the moment.

  6. I've followed your blog for quite some time now and there is something so special about your paintings, the colors are bright and pure, but its the edges.....uniquely your style. I had no idea you used ws oils...me, too. I've written some art tips on my blog, here: http://www.artforthesoulofit.com/2011/02/03/why-i-use-water-soluble-oils/ for anyone interested in yet another's artist's take on this fabulous medium. Keep doing what you are doing, Diane. Fabulous!

  8. I am using the water soluable paints too. I don't plan on ever switching, but don't art teachers always want you to use their method? Well anyways, what brands are you using? I have just started using oil paints again and I am using artisan.
