Underpainting

I was really hoping to finish this in one pass. I shouldh've put down some color(s) first thing, covering the whole canvas ... Getting caught up in details too soon is a mistake! Colors get muddy, bits of unsightly canvas peek through and well, live and learn. Anyway, it CAN be saved. (:

Layla the Cat

I want to enter a painting of my cat in the Greenwich Workshop Gallery's "Smallworks America" show. The entry deadline is August 31st. Layla is a beautiful cat, she's got stripes on her back and dots on her belly. But I had a tough time painting her stripes and ended up smearing everything together at the end of the day--

Rose

Rose I 12" x 9" Oil on Stretched Canvas $285.
To purchase, please email me! diane@dianehoeptner.com

The lovely rose cost $3 at Cleveland's Westside Market. I got MANY great shots of it in various settings and I'm looking forward to painting it again. It's amazing to me that you can start and complete a WHOLE (oil) PAINTING in one day. (Color pencils take SO much longer!) I'm not 100% happy with this one, but will tweak it later. I want my paintings to look "effortless and painterly." -- Inspiring examples of seemingly "effortless & painterly" can be found here: Carol Marine, Jeremy Lipking & my old friend from LA, Chase Chen.

Spring Flowers

Crabapple Flowers 8" x 8" Oil on Canvas Panel $95To purchase, please email me! diane@dianehoeptner.com

These flowers grow on a Flowering Crabapple tree in my Mother's backyard. She displays them in shot glasses and old milk jars. --The tree is GLORIOUS from a distance. Unfortunately, it is rotting from the inside out and will have to be chopped down. Mum's completed her "Master Gardener" certificate recently, I suspect she'll replace it with something equally fabulous.

A Portrait in Color Pencil

Here's my too-cute nephew, Russell. Tomorrow is his Mother's 40th birthday and this is my gift to her. Portrait is color pencil on tinted paper.
