Something Completely Different

I gave my sister two 6x6 paintings of her oldest son Nathan for Christmas. That's Nathan there. Cute, huh?

Now, she has offered me cash money (!!) to paint her youngest, Russell. I did a color pencil portrait (it's at the bottom) of red haired Russy earlier in the year. I've been meaning to paint him in oils too... I just hadn't gotten around to it yet.

Anyway, I may regret making the announcement here, but next I will paint another Mother/Child portrait, this time with my sister and Russell.

I'm still so thrilled with oil painting. When I think of the ENDLESS hours I spent hunched over a drafting table using color pencils (AH!)-- Don't get me wrong I loved color pencils too. But nothing beats the speed and efficiency of oils.

Well, my camera just does NOT do red so great, this painting is better in life.

In other news: The BAYarts Gallery has offered to show my paintings beyond the Christmas season, actually all year! I'm excited to have another gallery representing my work. I look forward to providing them a fresh selection of florals and toy paintings-- both dailies and larger pieces throughout 2009!

Petal: The Found Dog

Petal 6" x 6" Oil on Canvas Panel NFS
This is my friends Suzi and Larry's dog. Suzi found her wandering lost in Culver City, California. My friends are what one might call Type-A personalities. Suzi is a digital special effects wizard who will remember your birthday and HAND MAKE a card to mark the occasion. They vacation in Bali and throw seemingly effortless parties in their back yard. Larry produces short films and makes awesome guacamole. (I miss them!) Anyway, they posted numerous "lost dog" bulletins--and no one claimed the pup. You might think they wouldn't have the time or inclination to adopt.... but don't cha know, they did just that! They named her Petal and she's part of the family now.

Vision Restoration at Hoeptner Desktop Clinic

Today a darling set of pulltoy duckies became sighted (and even more darling) when artist and dedicated connoiseur of frivolous pursuits, Diane Hoeptner fitted each with custom GOOGLY EYES. The grateful duck family agreed to pose for another round of portrait paintings. The portraits will be showcased on this blog in the near future.

Pair of Red Amaryllis Paintings

Pair Amaryllis Paintings each 16" x 8"
Oil on Canvas Panel both for $515.
diane@dianehoeptner.com
Here's my latest: as promised, a pair of paintings each featuring an Amaryllis. Photographing larger paintings is definitely harder than the smalls. I'll attach a detailed image too. This is one of those plants that begs to be painted again and again. I love the contrast of the geometric greens against the organic shaped reds. The set of blooms that unfolded AFTER this one was more symmetrical with each one pointing out in an orderly and level fashion. Would like to paint those too, but I'm afriad they are already wilted.

There's much glare on the photo of this painting! I really like how the various reflections and light spots came out in this. May attempt to photograph it again later after the paint dries. **No more glare, photo updated on 12/27/08

This most awesome Amaryllis was purchased at Giant Eagle for $7. It's already grown three HUGE blooms and there's seems to be another bud opening up. I will paint it very soon!

This skull sits between a miniature (working) engine and a kaleidescope on my husband's collectibles shelf. He found it along with the rest of the skeleton inside an old tree stump. He thinks it's from a "weasel-type" animal. I'm happy with this painting.

The more I paint old wood Pinocchio doll, the more loosey goosey my brushwork becomes. I may be getting more familiar with which edges need tightened and which ones can blend and/or disappear. That is very satisfying.
