Owl painting Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Owl 1  Oil on wood  8" x 8"  SOLD
I've been wanting to paint owls for a while and when I found out the Ohio Bird Sanctuary was giving a lecture on owls featuring live owls (out of their cages!)-- I grabbed a camera and drove south to Mansfield.  Don't be surprised if you see more paintings of owls and birds of prey!
Side note:  I think the patterned backgrounds I've done in the past really helped me "translate" the landscape background here...  to stay back!  I find landscape painting very difficult (and greatly admire artists who can do it!)  Painting it as a background was not so hard...  Really happy with this one.

  1. Really nice. I think the painting of fur must have translated into doing feathers too because it turned out so well. You are a pro.

  2. I love it and the landscape behind works perfectly. The eyes sing here! Funny- I was painting early this AM in my backyard studio listening to meditation music and I heard an owl. I thought it was the music but when I turned it off there it was- who-who-whooo….Now I want to paint one- ands here yours is! ah… synchronicity...

  8. I was not surprised this one sold even before I came over . Stunning .
This is a natural subject for you. The landscaping is excellent and as you say, kept back as it should. The lighting is perfect , the feathers are marvelous, everything bring us to that eye. Congratulation!

  10. This one's a keeper for sure! The winter lighting is lovely and the color palette is perfect. What a wonderful reference photo opportunity you had - I always curse those darn cage bars.

Helen - I hope Diane doesn't mind me answering your question - the only way to visually tell male and female owls apart is size - the females are bigger!

  12. Wow--Stunning owl Diane--the eyes are fantastic! A beautiful addition to my "Flock of Owls" board. And yes, one of the reasons I love owls is--sorry guys--the females are "superior." :) Happy painting! Aimee
