Nathan portrait of my eldest nephew

Nathan  Oil on wood  10" x 8"  NFS
When I painted Nathan's younger brother Russell I was casual and almost careless going into it.  It was my experiment in (human) portraiture...  I didn't think I'd be able to pull it off and that somehow made for a very pleasant experience and I was really happy with the painting...  This time around with Nathan's portrait, I struggled and it probably shows.  After two wipes, the hair seemed ok--but when the time came to paint more subtle color/value adjustments (etc) ...let's just say I was fatigued.  We'll do another sometime soon.  Next time around, I want to be make sure his beautiful blue eyes can be seen.
Love these guys!

  3. You are truly amazing! Your paintings always look so soft. How do you achieve that quality?

  4. They are truly lucky boys, and cute! His personality shows through the quietness. So you haven't done many portraits? Wow! I haven't wrestled up enough courage to give it a go.

  5. Wow- yes both of these portraits are so 'wonderfully real'...yet painterly (how do I describe it?). Sensitive - and show that vulnerability of youth - rough & tumble boy, yet the tenderness of the age.

  6. One of the best portraits of a boy I've seen. You rival the likes of Rose Frantzen!
    Superb!

  7. Another wonderful portrait, Diane! My old art teacher said that you can tell a true portrait artist by how they render an ear, simply perfect...and with your nephew in this particular vantage point, he reminds me of another young boy I know. This young man is The Peter Pan. :) Bravo, Diane! xoxo

  9. You should be very proud of this portrait. It doesn't look like you struggled with it at all and it is very successful.

  11. NIce!!! I know what you mean about struggling through a portrait. But I think you're right. Some blue eyes with all that warmth would look stunning.

  12. I think you did a wonderful job. Children are the toughest subjects to paint in my opinion. You're multi-talented: still lifes, cats AND people!!
