One of the pleasures of blogging is realizing you are not the only one who does what-ya-do. Before blogging I wouldh've second guessed my latest inspiration. My latest inspiration is to make some shamelessly decorative paintings with cool graphic backgrounds USING ACRYLIC paint! Oh, the horror, right? What kind of real artist experiments with different paints and then goes from "painterly traditional" (indulge me) to decorative graphics?? Well, as it turns out: MANY! Many of the artists I admire switch subjects, paints and styles like they change a pair of shoes. Gotta LOVE that, thank you fellow bloggers for sharing (You know who you are!) Yes, we'll be trying some new decorative acrylic florals in 2010!

Poppy Field Rough Study

Husband, his boys and I will spend Christmas Day at my Mother's. My sister and her family will be there too. My Mother's home is flawlessly decorated at this time of the year and Christmas there is always a joy! Heh, beyond plugging in a light-up tree here I haven't done much to prepare for the holidays yet. This may be my last painting for a few days. There's much shopping, baking and decorating to do. Happy Holidays, dear reader.

Designer Rough Poppy Painting

The importance of roughing it.
Here's another oil sketch on paper, 11x11. I've been needing to be less "precious" about my approach lately. I was so happy with my Nov. 18th painting Perfect Storm and it made me more careful and also more needy to make another grand slam. But what I really need is to paint more & think less... Getting tight and harboring grand expectations is not a recipe for success.

Windy Yellows
Sorry if I talk about the weather too much but I can't get over just how cold it gets here. It's in the 20's with windchill making it feel like ZERO. We keep checking the siding and gutters on the house to make sure they aren't flying away with the wind. Anyway, I will photograph this painting again when the light and temp is more reasonable. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss sunny Southern California today.

Blue Noel Floral Red Flower Painting
Blue Noel 8" x 10" Oil on Board N/AClick image to see bigger
I complained about how difficult it is to paint this type of flower a few weeks ago... But I've been wanting to try a bleeding red on gray color combo and these alstromerias were perfect. Will definitely follow with more exploration on this as time permits. This painting is better in life.
