Yellow Flowers & Sandpiper 8"x 8" Oil on MDF Board NFS

Here's today's efforts. I can't say I'm thrilled with it, but I've been wanting to try a more complex composition. This painting has both yellow roses and daffodils, plus a hand carved sandpiper (which I love.) Ah, live and learn. (Sorry, no corresponding interior paint colors for this.)

Earlier today/Thursday

Greetings from Cleveland, OH where it is pouring rain and very, very dark at 3pm. I'm working on a rather complex (for me!) still life.

Assuming I can get it to look presentable and the sun comes out enough to photograph it, I will post a picture later. Here we have this week's Ebay offering, available for a crazy low starting price and no reserve. Auction ends Sunday night.

Two sunflowers in an old crock, actually that crock is part of the still life I'm painting today... but I digress. This painting of sunflowers is better in life, do place a bid, here.

Cadmium Gerbers Daisy Oil Painting

Cadmium Gerbers 8"x 8" Oil on MDF Board $175.

The first time I painted these Gerber daisies was here (back in November of last year.) That painting is still one of my all time favorites and this one simply re-visits, this time a bit bigger. One of the things that makes this painting work is the contrast betweens super saturated daisies against all the warm neutrals!! Paint colors suggested below will coordinate brilliantly with the "warm clay beige" background of this painting!
Dutch Boy Cozy Neutral W017, Dutch Boy Shingle Tan N004

Royal Pinks Daisy Painting

Royal Pinks 8"x 8" Oil on MDF Board $175.

Regular visitors may recognize this painting, I've done a few variations of it. Normally, there's a huge orange Gerber daisy in the background? Yeah, I had to wipe that off, it wasn't working. Not sure if the two remaining pink daisies are really worth a post, but there you have it. Some paintings are easy, some aint.

A Few Changes

Iris Melody on Cream 8"x 8" Oil on MDF Board $175.
A few changes: My new "default" daily painting size is going from 6x6 to 8x8. It's more fun to paint bigger and 8x8 is a standard frame size. ...which is handy when presentation comes into play. Furthermore, I'm switching out the Dick Blick canvas panels for hand cut and gesso'd MDF board. I LOVE the smooth painting surface of this board. Lastly (is that a word?) some paintings will feature colors that coordinate or match well known interior paint brands. This feature is experimental in nature and it will last as long as I find it interesting.
Will start with a Cleveland based paint company: Glidden Natural & Comforting Wild Honey 30YY 57/258 (background+,) Glidden Relaxed & Cozy Nostalgic 70RB 11/196 (purples+)

It's my one year blogiversary!

Happy Blogiversary to me! It was exactly one year ago today that I wrote the following blog entry: "This is an experiment." I thought keeping an art blog would be a good way to be accountable to myself and it was/IS...but it's become much more. I get a little teary eyed just thinking about the good things that have come from this blog.

It lead to an awareness and eventually a dedication to the practice of painting every day. Daily painting has forced rapid improvements in my technique and that gave me the courage to get serious about selling my art. ...which lead to opportunities I couldn't have even imagined.

I always loved making art? But when I started sharing my paintings online, every day --I loved it even more. Best of all: this blog lead me to the most wonderful people. My collectors are a consistent and surprising source of delight and not just because they pay me money to do what I love. My fellow art bloggers and daily painters are a wellspring of inspiration, encouragment and support. I'm ever so grateful to the talented artists who find time to make meaningful comments about my paintings. Also, thanks to blogging, I know that I'm not the only one who feels downright burnt out (sometimes!) and I know I'm not the only one who measures my worth by the quality of painting I did today...(oh, yes I do.) So, thank you very much for reading, buying, commenting and sharing "art" through blogging. Thank you especially for visiting this blog, don't ever underestimate how much it means to me.

Shameless Self Promotion in Cleveland, OH

I've thrown 6x6 "Daffodil & Moonbeams" up for auction on Ebay. Bidding starts at $65 with no reserve, auctions ends Sunday!
In unrelated news: Mulholland and Sachs, a store at ETON on the Eastside of Cleveland is now offering a selection of my 12" x 12" flower paintings! I was told in no uncertain terms that all the paintings would require custom frames in order to be exhibited... I (sort of grudgingly) obliged and was then astonished at how awesome they looked! If you happen to find yourself shopping at Eton, first congratulate yourself for having a healthy income and then stop by Mulholland and Sachs to buy a Diane Hoeptner original.

It's not like I'm not painting. 22x22 Red Tulips

Here's three 22x22 tulip paintings. They are on paper and still very wet, photos don't do justice. The top one especially is catching a lot of glare. All are sold, (woohoo!) I debated about whether or not to post these, as they are new versions of work I've posted previously--figured something was better than nothing!

Sometimes freedom of expression is over-rated. (: The customer who commissioned this painting mailed me a paint color swatch. She also emailed a photo of an iris themed lampshade found in the room in which the painting was to be displayed. I sent her possible reference photos-- and she had an instant favorite. (Love that!) I've been painting white flowers for a few days now and the design, color and composition "options" for painting those seems endless. (I didn't post all of them, oh no, not all of them were successful.) A commission like this is a welcomed opportunity to provide what is asked for and to have the satisfaction of knowing it is appreciated.

Here's the first of six 8x8 paintings I am doing for "A Square Deal," a travelling exhibit that takes place in Philadelphia. The show is modelled after the Danish art collaborative called 20/20 visions and it will help raise funds for a variety of chairities.
I LOVE how it came out... Have been wanting to paint white (ish) flowers on a light backdrop, this isn't exactly what I had in mind, but close.
