Random Pondering and Bad Analogies

I'm still working on the 22 x 22 florals and another larger commission. Here's a drawing/painting from about 7 years ago... It's a combination of watercolor and Prismacolor pencils, 14 x 11 and signed in my maiden name, Cooper. When I moved "back home" to Ohio from Los Angeles, I gave it to a friend.

I like to think that what I'm doing with OILS is so different and so much grander than what I ever did with color pencils? It sure feels different. But I look at some of my old work and I realize I'm just picking up where I left off-- My subject choices, compositions and general sense of aesthetics hasn't changed. My ability to portray those things has certainly improved... Going from pencils to oils is like going from riding a bike through a pleasant forest to hopping onto the expressway in a lambourghini. Both journies are worthwhile, but the one I'm on now seems to be providing more scenery and getting me where I want to go a bit better.

  2. Colored pencils seems to take so long. Where did you ever get the patience? Your oils are so loose and fresh.

  3. Pat, thanks a bunch. I must have read that line 10X trying to figure out if it made any sense at all. Was it meaningful to me, but gibberish to anyone else?? (: JANELLE: Oh, thank you very much. I'm GOING FOR loose and fresh (!totally!) and you know I never could get anything resembling a loose and fresh "spirit" with color pencils? This is food for thought too.

  4. I love seeing your pre-oil work. It confirms you've always had an eye for color, composition and rendering a beautiful image.

  5. You may be using the same subjects, but your point of view is much more intimate and your use of color is more sophisticated now. I really like the whole series of tulips and iris paintings that you show in the sidebar. Very lovely grouping.

  6. Maybe the pencil art doesn't have the vibrancy and exuberance of the oils, but I like this very much... the preciseness, delicacy and subdued color scheme appeals to me. I also like the combination of the flowers, the glass jar and the stand... with just the right amount of empty space on one side... beautifully composed.

  7. Chris, thanks. I feel like I do too and that's so meaningful and worthwhile...and I wouldn't have gotten to it otherwise. Thanks very much for commenting. Meowart: Thank you. (:
